Temples & Lake Communities
VIP
full or half day - Kampong Khleang Fishing Community
A commercial fishing
community deep in the Tonle Sap Lake - truly the Hidden
Cambodia. No other tourists. 8.00 am depart: Travel by
road about 35 kms south and turn on to a dirt road that leads to the
edge of the lake. Board a motorboat to Kampong Khleang,
meaning the village of the stilts, a lively commercial fishing
village located south on the edge of the Tonle Sap lake. (No life
jackets!) All houses are stilted and some are up to four & five
meters tall. Enter the stilted village, now flooded and
travel through this large town through to a more separate Vietnamese village on to the edge of the Tonle Sap.
|
 |
|
Here we stop to
look at the houses, the floating gardens, the small shops, the array
of animals and dogs that live on houseboats etc. Further out we
visit those actively fishing shrimps and other
fish using an assortment of hand held and larger fish traps.
Lunch on a boat house in the Vietnamese fishing village where
this family repair nets for living and have their own fish farm.
They have a very comfortable house with a toilet and we take a small
portion of their decking to lay a mat and have lunch prepared by
Hidden
Cambodia staff. Back through the many waterways to visit
the main central part of Kampong Kleng, the interesting house of our
boat driver, see a river back street from his balcony, the
neighborhood and his wife’s rural kitchen. Back on the boat and out
again to visit the local wat, market and school, located on an
island
in the middle of the town! Some interesting murals honor Buda and it
may be possible to get a blessing by local monks, for a small
donation to the wat. Often requested by guests so that they can hear
the chanting! Our last stop is a prominent family’s beautiful wood
house, a home and commercial location to see their crocodile
business and to avail of their pristine tiled toilets! We also
support a woman's small community initiative in Tnoal Dach
community fishery where they produce
handicrafts from
water hyacinth.
